Hear the Voice of Wind: A Virtual Reconfiguration of Transition at the Yeongdeunggut with 3D Point Clouds

Hear the Voice of Wind by Meeyung Chung, Seungmin Lee, Sungbaek Kim, Jingyung Her, and Professor Jinjoon Lee has been accepted as a full paper at ISEA 2025.

[Abstract]
This article examines the intersection of art, technology, and spirituality through the lens of Hear the Voice of Wind, a virtual artwork created by the artist Jinjoon Lee and the TX Creative Media Lab. As an exemplary work of technoshamanism, the authors present their digital recreation of Jeju Chilmeoridang Yeongdeunggut, a UNESCO-designated ritual from Jeju Island, Korea, which honors the goddess of wind, Grandmother Yeongdeung. Utilizing 3D point cloud technology, the artwork integrates the ritual's audio cues, visual symbols, and narratives into audio-reactive visualization to reconstruct the ritual cosmos in virtual space. In the VR setting, users navigate through the cosmological world which positions them as interbeing within the interconnected 3D point cloud landscape. This study demonstrates the liminality inherent in virtual space while highlighting the transformative potential of technological mediation to reshape human consciousness as an emergent outcome.
